A4A: Expect busy skies this holiday season Santa will have tens of millions of travelers join him in the skies this holiday season, according to Airlines for America. The association estimates that 45 million people will fly on U.S. airlines between Dec. 17 and Jan. 4, up from 44 million last year. Planes are projected to be 80 to 90 percent full in the winter holiday period, with the busiest travel day expected to be Dec. 19. The lightest travel days are expected to be Christmas Eve and Christmas, and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
